Salton Sea

Salton Sea

The water in the Salton Sea is contaminated, so any additional water pumped into it will also become contaminated. A plan is in place to drain the water and remove 6 feet of soil from the lake bed and also any contaminated soil from surrounding areas. The contaminated soil will be formed into a large mountain nearby and capped with clean soil. A mining company will perform the work and any uncontaminated soil will be processed and sold off by the mining company.

Ten percent of the existing water will be held in a storage area off site and that is expected to keep the existing fish alive.

Once the contaminated soil is removed, recharge pipelines will pump sea water into the Salton Sea and restore the water level to the high point. The existing water with the fish in it will be treated and diluted before being pumped back into the Salton Sea.

The source of the contamination will be diverted away from the Salton Sea and any runoff water entering the lake will be tested and treated before entering the lake.

The lake will be used for recreation and also to aid in cooling the local environment.
