A number of engineering projects are being proposed to combat the worsening drought in the Western United States. The projects are also expected to help lower the rising temperatures caused by the drought.
The Western States Water Replenishment Program is the plan for a large scale multi-faceted project, building inland desalination plants in California, Utah and Arizona to supply water to California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. The projects are still in the conceptual stages, but it could postpone concerns of a water shortage in west for the future.
California has 840 miles of coastline and rising tides that are threatening many people in the state. WSWRP can create more water than Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada and Utah can use and they can do it very fast. Other countries are using desalination technology, so it would be nice if the US could make new water and stop trying to rob Peter to pay Paul.
WSWRP has been trying to build inland desalination plants and salt processing plants for 10 years. So far everyone keeps saying it will rain any day, so just wait. I think we have waited long enough and this is now at the critical stage. Arguing about the same water is like a kid moving his food around on his plate. We need to create new water now, so let’s cut the red tape and let them get started. If we don’t do this for the people, please do it for the animals as they were here first.
The technology is available to build these plants and it is just the painstaking process of presenting the program to government departments to have the program approved. With public support and if action is taken now, the plants could be operational within the very near future. The projects will be expensive, but what is peace of mind and economic security worth? If nothing gets done, the problem will only get worse.
No human or animal in the United States of America should be without fresh water.
